Paper Money Grading

Preservation of Paper Money

Paper money and modern substitutes such as polymers are all subject to possible deterioration. Over time banknotes can be exposed to excessive handling, including human hand oil, airborne secretions, food and other contaminants.

There are also environmental factors like mold, climate, humidity and sunlight. There can be accidents like water, other beverage spills, and stains. Then don't forget chemical agents like tape, solvents, ink stains and increasingly common verification pens for higher denomination notes in circulation. It is not always easy to distinguish between toning, foxing, rust, types of pinholes and their adverse effect on banknotes and the grading process.

When there is a blemish on a note, World Banknote Grading™ strives to first identify it, consider what may have created it and then accurately describe it.

Using plastic encapsulation holders that are inert, safety tested and medical-grade impermeable, banknotes are protected from further handling, moisture and other types of biological contamination while still retarding oxidation, deterioration and fading from UV-light.

Medical-Grade Plastic Encapsulation Preservation

Liquids/Moisture Our system provides full protection with a solid seal around all four sides of the note to prevent damage from moisture and humidity.
Air/Gas Our medical-grade plastic is gas impermeable to retard oxidation.
Chemicals/Solvents Our medical-grade plastic is acid-free, inert, and will not react to hand oils or chemicals originally on the note or with contaminants on the exterior surface of the envelope.
Light Exposure Sunlight and ultra-violet light can fade ink on paper money and yellows many plastics. Our plastic has been tested to provide a significant level of UV light protection and reduce yellowing.
Transparency Our plastic has very good contact transparency for scans and copies.
Rigidity Our encapsulation envelope uses a very light and pliable plastic that still has enough stiffness to prevent curling or bending.
User Friendly Our plastic reduces scuffing and static electricity. The corners are also slightly rounded for your comfort when handling.

Label Security

Security for third party grading services is paramount and WBG has integrated a number of security measures into the label and sealing process to discourage counterfeiting and prevent fraud.

Certified Banknotes Authenticity Confirmation

World Banknote Grading also uses a web-based confirmation tool. At any time you can confirm a graded banknote in our database to determine if the note and grade are valid.

Improved Banknote Identification and Attribution

World Banknote Grading adds more to its label than just country, denomination, date, serial number, catalog number, and grade.

We also add exact dates if known, signature identification whenever possible, printer, and other specific characteristics beneficial to improved attribution.

To assist topical collectors, thematic information is also included on the back of each label.

We use an extensive reference collection of banknotes from almost 300 existing and obsolete countries as well as books, periodicals, and other research material to verify each note.

Direct comparisons with similar notes from a given country are utilized during the identification and grading process.
